Pakistan and Saudi Arabia Sign Major Defence Agreement

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia Sign Agreement

On Wednesday, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a major defence agreement during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Saudi Arabia. This agreement is seen as a significant step in strengthening the defence relations between the two countries.

A joint statement from both governments said the pact “reflects the shared commitment of both nations to enhance security and peace in the region and the world.” The agreement aims to improve defence cooperation and strengthen deterrence against any aggression.

The agreement states that "any act of aggression against one country will be regarded as an act of aggression against both."

Background of the Agreement

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have always had a strong relationship, based on military cooperation, economic ties, and shared Islamic values. This new agreement comes at a time when there are growing security concerns in the Middle East, especially after Israel’s recent attack on Qatar.

Impact of the Agreement

Former Pakistani Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi called the agreement a “significant development” with far-reaching consequences. She explained that Pakistan’s role as a security provider for Saudi Arabia and the Middle East has been strengthened.

Lodhi also mentioned that Arab countries are seeking security guarantees from new partners, especially as the United States' credibility as a security guarantor has been questioned. The agreement’s timing and context are important because of the recent events in the region.

India’s Reaction

Lodhi pointed out that this defence deal could upset India, noting that Pakistan’s growing military strength could concern its neighbour. She added that it is too early to predict India’s exact response.

South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman also commented on the agreement, saying that Pakistan is in a good position now, with support from key countries like China, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. However, he noted that this agreement would not necessarily stop India from attacking Pakistan.

Significance of the Deal

Former Senator Mushahid Hussain called the agreement the “most important military and diplomatic initiative in the last 50 years.” He also highlighted that it is the first defence deal between two Muslim countries.

Hussain emphasised that Saudi Arabia is not only a rich country but also a major diplomatic player in the region. He believed the pact would act as a deterrent for Israel. With Pakistan’s military strength and Saudi Arabia’s economic power, Hussain suggested that Israel would be unable to take action against the two countries.

Future Implications

Hussain also mentioned that the agreement could have an impact on terrorist groups like the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which could be affected by Pakistan’s strengthened defence position.

This agreement marks a new chapter in Pakistan-Saudi relations and has the potential to reshape the security dynamics of the Middle East and South Asia.
