Murad Ali Shdh, Chief Minister Sindh
The Sindh Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution rejecting any proposal to carve out Karachi as a separate province or federal territory, declaring the city an integral part of Sindh.
The resolution was presented by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah during a session held in Karachi on Saturday. Addressing lawmakers, he denounced what he described as divisive rhetoric aimed at separating the country’s largest city from the province. He said such proposals contradict historical facts, constitutional principles and democratic values.
The chief minister told the House that the people of Sindh stand united against any attempt to divide the province. He emphasized that Sindh’s unity is non-negotiable and reaffirmed that Karachi has always been — and will continue to remain — part of Sindh.
The resolution strongly condemns any effort to alter Sindh’s geographical or administrative structure by carving out Karachi as a separate entity. It reiterates the assembly’s commitment to safeguarding the province’s territorial and political integrity.
The development follows recent demands by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) to declare Karachi a federal territory. The party suggested invoking constitutional provisions to place the city under federal control.
MQM-P leader and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal raised the demand after the deadly Gul Plaza fire on January 17, which burned for nearly two days before it was brought under control. The incident claimed at least 73 lives and damaged around 1,200 shops.
Following the tragedy, senior MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar criticized the provincial administration, urging Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to remove the Sindh chief minister and other officials. He argued that if the provincial government could not effectively manage Karachi, the city should be placed under federal authority.
In response, Sindh government officials have maintained a firm position that Karachi’s constitutional status is not open for debate, stressing that the metropolis remains historically, politically and constitutionally part of Sindh. https://dmtn1.com/sindh-assembly-unanimously-passes-resolution-rejects-separate-status-for-karachi/
